Candle Safety Guide
Candles are a wonderful way to create a warm and inviting atmosphere in your home. To ensure your safety and the longevity of your candles, please follow these essential candle safety guidelines:
1. Keep the Wax Clean:
- Keep the wax pool free of debris, matches, or wick trimmings. This ensures a clean and safe burn. Be aware that decorations on or around the candle may catch fire, so remove them before lighting.
2. Trim the Wick:
- Before lighting your candle, always trim the wick to approximately 4mm (1/8 inch) in length. This helps prevent excessive smoke and ensures a clean, even burn.
3. Allow for a Full Wax Pool:
- During the first burn, allow the candle to burn until the entire top layer of wax becomes a liquid pool that reaches the edges of the container. This prevents the formation of a “memory ring” and ensures an even burn in subsequent uses.
4. Keep Away from Children and Pets:
- Place candles out of the reach of children and pets. Ensure that they cannot accidentally knock over a lit candle.
5. Avoid Drafts:
- Keep candles away from open windows, fans, air conditioning vents, and drafts. Drafts can cause uneven burning, excessive smoke, and potential hazards.
6. Use a Heat-Resistant Surface:
- Always place candles on a heat-resistant, flat surface. Avoid wooden or flammable surfaces. Use a candle holder or a heat-resistant mat to protect your furniture.
7. Never Leave Unattended:
- Do not leave a burning candle unattended. Extinguish all candles before leaving a room or going to sleep.
8. Use Candle Snuffers:
- To extinguish a candle, use a candle snuffer or gently blow it out. Avoid using the candle’s lid or blowing forcefully, as this can create hot wax splatters.
9. Store Candles Safely: – Store candles in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Heat and sunlight can affect the quality and scent of the candles.
10. Be Mindful of Allergies: – If you have known allergies or sensitivities to certain fragrances or essential oils, choose candles that are suitable for your needs.
11. Discontinue Use at ½ Inch Wax Remaining: – Stop using the candle when there is approximately ½ inch of wax remaining at the bottom. Burning the candle beyond this point may cause the container to overheat.
12. Remove all Flammable Decorations from the Wax Pool.
By following these safety guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty and ambiance of your candles while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. Remember, safety should always be a priority when using candles in your home.
